Sights of Georgia in Imereti, Mordinakh fortress built in the 18th century.
The Mordinakh Fortress in Imereti, which is one of the most beautiful places in Georgia, was awarded the status of a monument of national significance in 2018. Throughout history, the fortress has been besieged many times. However, Mordinakhe fell only once.
Modinakhe is a fortress decorating the Imereti region for Parting, not far from Sachkhere, it is erected 700 meters above sea level. The landmark of Georgia was built in the 30s of the XVIII century.
Modinakhe is not only one of the most beautiful places in Georgia, but also a historical monument. Three ancient courtyards were found here: early Bronze Age, Late Bronze Age-Early Iron Age and early antique era courtyards.
Also during the excavations, ancient graves of different eras were discovered, which contained pottery, bronze guns and various ornaments. The tombs hid a lot of jewelry, dishes, Roman coins and a large number of silver and gold objects.
In 2018, Modinakha was assigned a category of national significance. In 2019, it was decided to rehabilitate the great fortress.
Architecture.
During the study, it was found out that the fortress was built on the top of a chalk limestone, to the place of which there was a road on both sides.
The castle was surrounded by two walls, one of them was closed by a high tower, the other had two small towers at the end. A prison, a prayer tower and a house were erected in the middle.
History.
According to the stories, David Abashidze, the future father-in-law of Papun Tsereteli, refused to take his daughter to wife, saying that he did not have a castle or fortress, hearing this, Papun Tsereteli erected a fortress, after which he ordered David to come and see.
Back in 1735, Tsereteli was hiding in this castle, who went against the king of the Empire, he was considered a major feudal lord. Alexander V tried several times to get Tsereteli and capture his fortress, but as a result he failed. In 1766, when there was an Ottoman campaign, Salomon I settled in the fortress.
In 1767, the Tsereteli clan transferred its fortress to the possession of Tsar Modinakha. In 1810, during the Imereti uprising, the rebels against the government managed to capture the castle. Soon, the Russian army placed its own garrison within the walls of the fortress.
A little later, Modinakhe lost its strategic importance. Taking the fortress has always been too difficult for rivals. Geographical location played an important role in each capture, due to the fact that the fortress is located far beyond the settlements and surrounded by steep slopes, the invaders spent too much effort on its conquest.
In the entire history of Modinakhe was in the hands of the invaders only once and it was Russian attack aircraft.
It was possible to do this under the guidance of a woman. At that time, the defenders of the castle ran out of food, and traitors appeared in the walls of the fortress. In 1830, most of the castle was destroyed. Two cannons were mounted on the fortress.
To date, a large wall and several towers have been preserved from the great fortress. Most of the walls were destroyed by a terrible earthquake in 1991.
But despite its ruined state, Modinakhe is the pride of the people and choosing what to see in Georgia, every tourist is sent here. Only here there is a magnificent view of the river gorge and the mountains of Imereti and Racha.
