The village of Akaurta is located in Kvemo Kartli and is quite ancient in itself. The Church of St. Mary, built in the 5th century, has been preserved on its territory.
The architecture of the church located in Akaurta can be seen in the Greek style. Stucco and frescoes decorate the facade of the building. At the moment, according to sources, restoration work is underway to restore the original appearance of the Church of St. Mary in Akaurta.
In the east of Georgia, in Kvemo Kartli, you can find the stone Church of the Mother of God. This medieval building was erected on the territory of the settlement of Akaurta in the 5th-6th centuries. The places surrounding the church are quite picturesque: a dense Georgian forest, the river bank is visible in the distance, and the church itself is located on a hill and allows you to see the most beautiful places of Georgia at a glance. The architecture of the church is a traditional style of the Georgian Orthodox Church. The main domed hall is surrounded on both sides by extensions in the form of semicircular apses made of brick, here you will find something to see in Georgia for lovers of Greek architecture and history. From the eastern facade, you can see the projections of the columns that stood here several centuries ago.
The sights of Georgia are distinguished by their decor, it is difficult to find architectural monuments that would not be decorated with frescoes, authentic Georgian ornaments or scenes of national folklore. The Monastery of the Mother of God was no exception. The facades of the building are decorated with stucco and frescoes, the plot displays plants that seem to guard the walls of the church, there is definitely something to see here, especially for lovers of the Middle Ages and applied arts of the peoples of the Caucasus.
Due to the fact that the monument is quite ancient, many of its parts have suffered under the pressure of time, in 2007 the Ministry of Culture of Georgia organized the beginning of work to restore the original appearance of the church.
