Fragments of biography

Her real name was Natalia Georgievna Andronikova. She was born in Warsaw in 1904, into a princely family. Her father died in 1911, and her princely origins did not bode well for her, even being dangerous. She learned a new way of life and worked hard.

She worked in a match factory, then as a music teacher. She never considered herself an ideal of beauty, so she didn't take praise seriously.

Possessing a striking beauty, she always tried to avoid intrigue and scandal. Even when making drastic changes in her life, she tried not to cause pain.

Nikolai Shengelaya, a director and second husband, father of her sons, Eldar and Georgy, occupied a special place in her life. He died tragically in a car accident in 1943.

In everyday life, she kept a low profile whenever possible. Only occasionally did she enjoy her popularity. Unfortunately, one such incident ended in her death. It happened on June 14, 1953...

On her birthday, she was returning from Murmansk. There were no tickets for the Tbilisi flight at the ticket office. Then Nato told the ticket clerk, who didn't recognize her, that she was an actress and gave her name. The clerk gave Vachnadze the last ticket.

Back then, few people flew on airplanes. And accidents weren't reported in the newspapers or publicly discussed. But the news quickly spread across the country.

Nato Vachnadze went from being a screen legend to a national legend, becoming a symbol of the country, the epitome of the Georgian woman.

The Career of the Georgian Cinderella

Nato's career as a film actress began in 1923 in silent films, where she found herself completely by chance. Her photograph in a photo studio window caught the eye of an administrator at the Tiflis Film Studio (Goskinprom). According to some sources, director Bek-Nazarov also noticed her.

Be that as it may, the 19-year-old was invited to star in two films at once: "Patricide" by Amo Bek-Nazarov and "Arsen the Robber" by Vladimir Barsky.

Success was inevitable, and she immediately became very popular. The charm of the young beauty left no one indifferent. Nato's portraits were published in magazines and on advertising posters. She was compared to the silent film star Vera Kholodnaya.

Vachnadze became known as the suffering yet passive beauty; the women she played had similar personalities. She disliked this, yet directors constantly offered her similar roles. The system was in place, with the actress playing a single role that suited her.

The role of the seamstress Esma in the film "Three Lives" by director I. Perestiani became a bit more vivid. Nato was able to convey the character's emotional struggles and reveal her inner world.

But she dreamed of more complex and profound roles.

"It's a shame that the roles I've had to play are monotonous," she wrote in 1926. "I have to play a passive Georgian woman. Perhaps that's because that's how it is in life. The new type of Georgian woman is only just emerging. How I wish I could play an active role. Maybe I could have developed that kind of character?"

The first step toward new roles was the role of Gyuli in the film of the same name, directed by young directors L.F. Push and N.M. Shengelaya. The main character here protests the lack of women's rights; she is proactive. Thus, Nato takes another step toward mastery.

The era of sound films arrived, and Vachnadze didn't get lost there. However, she had a lot to learn. She practiced her diction, paid attention to theater actors, and adopted their stage experience.

Fame and a huge fan base could have turned her into a wayward film star. But that didn't happen. She always gravitated toward extraordinary people and was constantly learning something new.

Her acquaintances and friends included poets and writers, as well as film figures such as Vladimir Mayakovsky, Vladimir Grigorievich Barsky, Kote Marjanishvili, and Mikheil Chiaureli. When roles were scarce, she tried her hand as an assistant director, mastered editing, and participated in documentary filming.

One of Nato's first portrayals of a woman with a strong character was the role of Neno in Mikheil Chiaureli's film "Arsen." Many other, equally remarkable roles followed. Who knows, perhaps Nato Vachnadze would have become a world-famous film star. But her life was cut short too soon...
