The Akaki Robakidze House Museum is set up in a lived in house and keeps the setting in which the family lived. Memorial houses like this show furniture, photographs, documents and belongings left by the owner, and the story is told by relatives or staff. The collection is intimate and suited to small groups.
The house stands in Baghdati, a small Imereti town on the Khanistsqali river at the foot of the Adjara-Imereti range. The town is best known as the birthplace of Vladimir Mayakovsky, and the museum tradition here is strong. Around it are orchards, vineyards and the road towards Abastumani.
The house is small and half an hour is enough. The visit is easier to plan for the first half of the day and to arrange in advance. It makes sense to combine it with other sights in Baghdati and a wider Imereti route.
Tips
- Combine the visit with the Mayakovsky house museum in the same town
- Allow time for the drive, Baghdati is a few kilometres off the highway
- Come in the warm season, memorial houses can be cold in winter
How to get there
- South from Kutaisi via Sviri and Baghdati, about forty minutes by car
- Minibuses from Kutaisi run regularly, the town is walkable from the bus station
