The Chikhorishi Great Church is the elder of the two churches of the locality on the northern edge of Aspindza, above the Mtkvari valley. The pair stands close: the great church holds the height, and a hundred metres away lie the ruins of the small one, folding together into a short but complete route along one edge of the town.
From the ground by the church open the Mtkvari valley and the roofs of Aspindza: a place to feel the geography of this land before the Vardzia road. The climb from the town is short, and one can look in even between errands. At sunset the slope above the Mtkvari is at its best: the light falls along the valley.
The church is seen freely, with ordinary courtesy: modest dress and a quiet voice. The ruins of the small church next door are treated with care: no walking on the masonry.
