The Gergi Oniani House Museum keeps the setting of a lived in house and the objects tied to the name of its owner. Memorial houses like this in Racha rest on family memory: furniture, photographs, documents and everyday things stay where they were. The house gives a sense of how a small mountain town lived in the last century.
The museum stands in Ambrolauri, the administrative centre of Racha, on the bank of the Rioni. The town is small and everything is within walking distance: the embankment, the market, the older quarters. Around it are the mountains and the vineyards people come to Racha for.
The house is small and half an hour is enough for the visit. The first half of the day is the easier time to come, and it is better to arrange the visit in advance. Fold it into a wider Racha route, the museum does not need a day of its own.
Tips
- Combine the visit with a walk along the Rioni embankment nearby
- Allow two days for Racha, one is not enough for the region
- Come in autumn, the grape harvest is the most interesting season here
How to get there
- From Kutaisi via Tkibuli and Ambrolauri, about two and a half hours by car
- Minibuses to Ambrolauri run from Kutaisi, the rest of the way is on foot
