The house museum is devoted to Vardges Surenyants, a painter and graphic artist of the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries who worked in theatre and book illustration. The house shows material about his life and work along with the setting in which a town family of that time lived. The collection is intimate and made for an unhurried visit.
The house stands in the old part of Akhaltsikhe, not far from the Rabati fortress, the main sight of the town. The block is built up with low houses and terraces typical of Samtskhe. From the museum it is easy to climb to the fortress or to walk down to the centre.
The museum is small and half an hour is enough. The first half of the day is the easier time to come. It makes sense to join the visit with Rabati and a walk through the old quarters, half a day covers the whole centre.
Tips
- Combine the visit with the Rabati fortress, a few minutes on foot away
- Look into the old quarters around, the early century buildings survive there
- Use Akhaltsikhe as a base for trips to Vardzia and Sapara
How to get there
- From Tbilisi via Borjomi and Akhaltsikhe, about three hours by car
- Minibuses from Tbilisi and Batumi arrive at the Akhaltsikhe bus station, the rest is on foot
