The Muskhi village house is a traditional Meskheti dwelling preserved together with its setting: the hearth, the utensils, the textiles, the farm equipment. Building in Samtskhe differed from the lowlands, shaped by cold winters and stony ground, and this house shows that difference clearly. The same village also holds a school collection; they are separate places.

The house stands in Muskhi, a village in the Akhaltsikhe municipality, on the plateau south of Akhaltsikhe. Around it are fields, stony slopes and the roads towards Aspindza and Vardzia. The place is quiet and travellers pass by on the highway.

The house is small and half an hour is enough. The first half of the day is the easier time, and it is better to arrange the visit through the village in advance. Combine the trip with Vardzia and Rabati.

Tips

  • Combine the trip with Vardzia, the road runs the same way
  • Look at how the hearth is built, in Samtskhe it is distinctive
  • Check the way in the village, there are two separate collections here

How to get there

  • South from Akhaltsikhe along the road towards Aspindza, about twenty minutes by car
  • Roughly three hours from Tbilisi via Borjomi and Akhaltsikhe
