The church of the Archangel Michael in Akhaltsikhe is a church in the south-eastern quarters of a town known above all for the Rabati fortress. While the tourist flows circle the fortress, the Michael church lives its own quiet rhythm of an ordinary town parish: services, neighbours, candles and no tour groups at all.
For a guest of Akhaltsikhe it is a chance to see the town beyond the postcard centre: ordinary quarters, a church of their own and no souvenir bustle. From the fortress it is under twenty minutes on foot through the residential streets, past the schools and shops of ordinary Akhaltsikhe life.
Guests are met kindly, and the rules are usual: modest dress, a headscarf for women, silence during worship. The feast of the Archangel Michael in November gathers the whole parish by the church.
