The Kavta shrine is marked in the Telavi Municipality area, far from inhabited villages. There is no separate building here: the place is marked by stones and a levelled area, as is customary for mountain shrines of eastern Georgia.
The nearest marked site, the Svetitskhoveli church in the village of Shalauri, is about two and a half kilometres away. The area lies in the foothills above the Alazani plain, where vineyards give way to forest. The approach is unpaved and there are no signs.
Agree any photography with locals if anyone is around. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Leave spare time for the climb.
- In summer bring a hat, as there is almost no shade.
- Leave offerings only according to local custom.
Getting there
- Leave the car at the nearest street and continue on foot.
- Navigate by the coordinates, as there may be no signs on the approach.
