Circus

The Tbilisi Circus is an important cultural institution in the capital of Georgia and occupies a significant place in the history and cultural life of the city. Located on Heroes' Square, it was opened in 1939 and is an example of unique architecture and historical heritage.

The circus building, designed by architects S. Satunts, M. S. Neprintsev and V. Urushadze, is an example of the architectural art of that time. It was erected in 1938-1940 on a hill formed during the construction of Chelyuskintsev Street. A special feature of the building is its shape, consisting of two cylinders stacked on top of each other. The exterior is highlighted by an eight-column portico in the Corinthian style.

In the center of the building’s composition is a round auditorium with a diameter of 44 meters and a ceiling height of 23 meters, which can accommodate 2,000 spectators. This place has become the center of many bright and memorable circus performances.

Roman Gamsakhurdia, a famous Georgian writer, participated in the construction of the circus until his death in November 1939. The opening of the circus took place on December 29, 1939, although at that time the Georgian circus group had not yet been created.

In 1942-1953, the director of the circus was Vladimir Kavsadze, who made a significant contribution to the development of this institution.

From 2003 to 2011, the circus building was reconstructed, which made it possible to preserve and update its historical significance and architectural style. The Tbilisi Circus still remains one of the central places of cultural life in Tbilisi, attracting both locals and tourists with its exciting performances and unique architecture.
