  • Description

Kojori, the majestic fortress on top of Mount Azeula, is an epitome of history and natural beauty. This high mountain castle, also known as Kojori, is conveniently located 2 km south of the village of Kojori, near Tbilisi. From a distance, the expansive landscapes and stunning views open up, making it an ideal place to picnic, relax and enjoy nature.

The history of this fortress is full of twists and turns. Originally known as Agarani Fortress, it changed its name several times before receiving the name Kojori. On Mount Azeula, part of the Trialeti Range, it became evidence of important moments in the history of Georgia, including the period of the Great Turkey. This stone guardian was of strategic importance for feudal Georgia, withstanding sieges and changing its owners.

Legendary battles and conspiracies within the walls of Kojori create an atmosphere of mysticism, and the difficult position on the top of the mountain makes it impressive. The fortress, built in the 11th century, became a place of resistance to Persian invaders and young Georgian cadets. Today, in memory of those events, a memorial in honor of the cadets has been erected near the wall of the cathedral, emphasizing courage and heroism.

Although there is no master plan for Kojori due to repeated renovations, you will be able to see the enclosure and two towers adorning the southwest and northeast ends. Stone and brick walls dating from the 11th to 18th centuries transform over time, but retain the spirit of the past.

For those who crave adventure, the path to Kojori will be an exciting journey. You can get there by car, the last section is a dirt road, or take a bus, followed by a short walk. A visit to this historic fortified complex brings you not only fascinating views of the mountain vistas, but also the opportunity to experience the grandeur of Georgian history, embedded in stone and time.
