The Okhareshi church of St George stands in Gergeti above Stepantsminda. This is not the famous Gergeti Trinity seen on the slope below Kazbek: Okhareshi stands apart and is dedicated to St George.
Gergeti has long grown together with Stepantsminda and shares its life: the Georgian Military Road runs below, trails set out from here to the Trinity and further into the mountains, and Kazbek rises above it all. The nearest neighbouring shrine, the church of St George in Garbani, stands almost seven kilometres away.
The rules are those of any working church: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, quiet. Gergeti is visited all year round, but in winter the road up can be closed by snow, and in summer the Trinity is crowded, so the climb is calmer in the morning.
💡 Tip
- Not to be confused with the Gergeti Trinity below Kazbek
- Gergeti above Stepantsminda, by the Georgian Military Road
- In winter the road up can be closed by snow
