The Giorgi Sachechelashvili House Museum keeps the setting of a village house and the objects tied to the name of its owner. It shows furniture, photographs, documents and everyday things that reveal the way a Kakhetian family lived. The collection rests on family memory, so the account is usually detailed and personal.
The house stands in Kakabeti, a village in the Sagarejo municipality, on the edge between the Gareji steppe and the vineyards of Kakheti. Around it are fields, orchards and the road people take towards David Gareji. The village is quiet and sees few visitors.
The house is open daily from nine in the morning until six in the evening. Half an hour is enough for the visit. It makes sense to combine the trip with a route to David Gareji or towards Sighnaghi.
Tips
- Combine the visit with a trip to David Gareji, the road passes by
- Ask about the family documents, usually the most interesting part
- Carry small notes in cash in case a donation is expected
How to get there
- From Tbilisi through Sagarejo, about an hour and a half by car
- Minibuses run as far as Sagarejo, beyond that you need a taxi or a lift
