The Marian church in Shavshvebi is the only church site of the village, which is rather an exception for this part of Shida Kartli: neighbouring villages usually keep several.
Shavshvebi lies east of Gori in the Mtkvari valley, on a level stretch between the city and Kvakhvreli. The road here is simple and flat, which sets the village apart from most churches in the area: no climb and no dirt track required. If you are driving from Gori towards Uplistsikhe and the rock churches of Kvakhvreli, the village falls directly on the way.
No dating has become attached to the building. It is worth stopping here in passing, as a pause between the city and the rock complex. Dress soberly, women bring a headscarf.
