  • Description

The Gori Fortress is a majestic historical structure rising on a steep hill in the very center of Gori, in the Kartli region. This ancient fortress complex is steeped in history dating back to the first millennium BC, confirmed by archaeological finds on the northern slope.

The first mention of the Gori Fortress in sources dates back to the 13th century. Since then, it has become a key strategic point symbolizing political dominance over Shida Kartli. Over the centuries, the fortress underwent numerous reconstructions, reaching its modern appearance in 1774, when it was completely restored by King Irakli II. In the first years of the annexation of Kartli-Kakheti to Russia (1801), the grenadier battalion of the Russian army was located here, which gave the fortress strategic importance. Over time, it lost its military importance.

The Gori Fortress, built of cobblestones and cut stones, is an oval citadel, best preserved on the western side, known as "Tskhrakara". Next to it there are auxiliary fences in the south and east. It is remarkable that the original entrance to the fortress is not visible, but the vaulted doors of the late period are located in the middle of the southern wall. The eastern part of the complex recalls the ruins of a small church, and in the past there was also a tunnel for collecting water and a reservoir.

Despite severe damage caused by the 1920 earthquake, Gori Fortress continues to inspire with its grandeur and rich history. By visiting this location, you will plunge into the ancient world, where strategic importance and architectural beauty merged.

It is recommended to visit the Gori Fortress for anyone interested in history, architecture and the atmosphere of ancient times. This place will not only allow you to experience the grandeur of the past, but also offer visual pleasure from stunning views of the surrounding area.
