The Mother of God church in Oshora is the working church of a village above the right bank of the Mtkvari, north of Aspindza. It stands in the residential part and lives by the parish calendar: services, patronal days, neighbourly cares. Inside it is simple and light, with the walls recently freshened.
Oshora is a good illustration of the Samtskhe rule of turning off the highway: a couple of minutes from the road along the Mtkvari, and instead of a transit landscape before you is a village with its Mother of God church, gardens and a view over the river valley. Fifteen minutes here change one’s idea of how this part of Samtskhe looks.
One enters freely, with the usual courtesy of a working church: modest dress, a quiet voice, respect for a service if one is under way. If the doors are shut, a look from outside and a walk along the village street are enough.
