  • Description

The mysterious and majestic fortress-city of Akhalkalaki, located in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, invites travelers on an exciting journey into the past. Its history goes back more than a thousand years, going back to the distant 11th century.

Inside the fortress complex, the mysterious doors of the citadel, ancient towers, a caravanserai, the ruins of a church and houses, as well as an ancient mosque open before you. Archaeological finds indicate that a settlement existed on this territory in the pre-Christian era, and the remains of the walls of Cyclopean buildings were used in the Middle Ages.

In the 11th century, Akhalkalaki became a fortress city, serving both as a guardian of feudal power and as a stronghold against enemies. It is interesting to note that the fortress was destroyed twice before its completion in 1065 and 1068 as a result of the invasions of the Seljuk Sultan Alp Arslan.

Until the 19th century, Akhalkalaki changed its role in the region, now being a feudal stronghold, now falling under the rule of the Persian Shah, and then the Ottoman Empire. In 1811, the city was captured by the Russian Empire, but was soon returned to Turkey. On September 22, 1828, Russian-Georgian troops under the leadership of General I. Paskevich returned this historical treasure to Georgian hands.

Today Akhalkalaki appears to visitors with visible traces of centuries-old history. The remains of the founding period, combining the defense system of the fortress and the atmosphere of city life, create a unique impression. Travelers looking for great history and visual memories should definitely visit this magical place in Samtskhe-Javakheti.
