St George's Church stands southeast of Adishi village, Mestia Municipality, among the churches, cathedrals, monasteries and synagogues of the region. The church dates to the 10th century, built on a high bank of the Adishi River, its walls made of hewn stone and finished with lime plaster.
Inside, fragments of frescoes by a local master survive, dedicated to the cult of St George: scenes from his life and miracles decorate the walls, though the painting has been partially lost to time. Of particular note is the fresco in the apse conch, depicting St George enthroned, flanked by the Mother of God and John the Baptist.
Worth clarifying one point: outside, traces of painting survive not on all facades of the church, but only on the south wall, where minor fragments of decoration remain visible. Worth keeping in mind when visiting, to avoid disappointment expecting painted facades all around.
