  • Description

In the heart of the mysterious Svaneti, among the majestic Caucasus mountains, rises the Church of the Savior Khalde. This stone temple, immersed in history and mystery, is a true treasure of Georgia. Built in the 19th century from chert, it majestically takes us back to an era when medieval craftsmen created works inspired by faith and art.

Initially, an ancient church with unique frescoes stood on this site, but it was destroyed during the Khalde uprising under the pressure of Russian troops. However, thanks to the art of Dmitry Bakradze, the interior of the temple came to life again, and stone details from the previous structure decorate the new hall. Inside the temple you can find an icon of St. George from the 10th century, small but full of history.

The temple amazes with its architecture: arched entrances, wooden doors with ornaments, and an iconostasis carved by master woodcarver Jaba Jokhadze add uniqueness to this sanctuary. Although the plaster has partially weathered over time, this only adds to the antiquity and mystery of the temple.

Svaneti attracts many tourists with its archaic appearance and rich history. Here in the eastern part of the region you can find a more traditional way of life and see many ancient stone structures such as temples and towers. The Church of the Savior Khalde becomes an incredible adventure for those who seek to feel the spirit of old Georgia and plunge into the mystical atmosphere of this amazing place.
