  • Description

In the heart of Samegrelo, in the picturesque village of Abedati, where time seems to slow down, the mighty Abedati Fortress rises. This historical monument reveals its centuries-old history, layering layers of time, starting from the 4th-6th centuries.

According to the assumptions of Parmen Zakaria, the most ancient part of the fortress, known as Onoguris, dates back to ancient times. The walls of the fortress, built from torn stones, form two spectacular enclosures. The main one, 10-12 meters high, impresses with its rounded structure in the north and east, maintaining its grandeur to this day. The second fence, now only at ground level, is combined with the tower of the first layer facing the slope.

Digging into the historical layers of the fortress, not only ceramic artifacts of the Hellenistic period (III-I centuries BC), but also silver coins of Kirmaneuli from the 13th-14th centuries, as well as Turkish silver coins and smoking pipes of the 17th-18th centuries were discovered . In the very heart of the fortress, in the eastern wall, hides a church from the 9th century, built of limestone and giving this place a special spirit of the times.

This historical Abedati Fortress, with its majestic walls and centuries-old history, embodies not only the importance of medieval military strategies, but also the cultural heritage of Western Georgia. Visitors can not only enjoy the majestic views of the surrounding area, but also immerse themselves in the richness of the past left behind by this amazing place. The Abedati fortress is not just walls and towers, but a living witness of history, alluring with its mystery and beauty.
