The church is dedicated to St. George. In Racha most village churches carry his name, and the reason is simple: George is here the patron of shepherds and travellers, and the mountain villages lived by their herds and by the road across the passes.

Sakao lies five kilometres from Oni, away from the main valley. There are almost no neighbours nearby: the closest church of the same dedication, the shrine of Khideshlebi, stands about five kilometres away, the ruins of Pipileti almost seven. The road here runs up a side gorge and ends at the village itself.

The place is quiet and little visited. The church is a village one and services are not held every day. Inside, dress modestly and keep voices low. In winter the roads of the side gorges are not cleared at once, so the warmer months, when the slopes are dry, are the better choice.
