The church is dedicated to the Virgin. In mountain Mtianeti churches of the Virgin were raised in villages inhabited all year: summer shepherd camps made do with small shrines, while a full church meant a permanent settlement.
Tkhiliana lies in the east of the Pasanauri mountain district, away from the main gorges. Its nearest neighbours, the three cross complexes of the Akusho tract, stand almost six kilometres off. Pasanauri is about twenty six kilometres away, Dusheti forty four: a remote place even by the measure of these mountains.
The road is a mountain one and long, so the warmer months and a margin of time are advisable. The church is a village one, services are not held every day, yet it can always be approached. Dress modestly, keep quiet inside, leave offerings untouched. Summer here is cooler than in the valley.
