The church of St. George in Kharchisho is a village church in the mountains east of the Zhinvali reservoir, where the road itself is part of the experience. The way runs along the Aragvi, through gorges and climbs, and at the top waits the reward: the church, the village and views over the ridges of Mtianeti.
People reach it deliberately, and, by all appearances, no one regrets it: Kharchisho is one of those places where mountain Georgia opens up without intermediaries: the village, the church, flocks on the slopes and a silence one wants to take home. A good finale for a one-day sortie from the Georgian Military Road into the depth of the highland.
In the church one keeps the usual courtesy: modest dress, a quiet voice, respect for a service. The mountain road asks for spare time and dry weather: after rain the climb to the village is harder.
