Shiomgvime Monastery, located 40 kilometers from Tbilisi on the banks of the Mtkvari River, is one of the most important monuments of pre-feudal Georgia. Its history goes back to the second half of the 6th century, when the Assyrian father Shio spent his last years in a dark cave, which became his tomb and gave the name to the monastery.
Shiomgvime became a center of culture and literature, where great Georgian thinkers and writers, such as Shio Mgvimeli, Vasily Karichi and many others, worked.
One of the most notable architectural elements of the monastery is the cave church of John the Baptist, built in the 11th century, combined with a domed church covered with a conical roof. The austere beauty of this architectural structure impresses with its simplicity and grandeur.
No less important elements of the complex are the refectory, the ancient bell tower and the painted chapel, surrounded by amazing views of mountain landscapes.
