  • Description

In the mountainous area of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region, in the Tianeti municipality, a centuries-old guardian has established itself - the Bochorma fortress complex. The date of his creation has been lost in the distance, but his immutable significance in the history of Georgia shines in the light of the 10th century. Bochorma, once a fortress and the political heart of Kakheti, stood unshakably, firmly on the rocks, when it was temporarily captured by the Arabs in 914. In exchange for the captive emir of Ganja Fadl ibn Muhammad, Bagrat IV was forced to give it, along with the fortress of Ujarma, to the king of Kakheti-Hereti Agsartan. In the 18th century, the great King Irakli II revived this example of Georgian defense capability. But historical whirlwinds did not spare Bochorma: in 1747 it became the arena for a fight between Irakli II and the pretender to the throne. Since then, the fortress has become a witness to time, coexisting with the centuries, until in the 18th century it ceased to be an important strategic point. But its walls, steeped in history, still rise today, and many tourists rush here to touch the ancient chronicles.

The architectural landscape of the Bochorma fortress complex is impressive: powerful walls, buried in the mountain peaks, encircle not only the Church of St. George, but also the palace, as well as various defensive and utility structures. The entrance to the fortress is located in the east, as if inviting guests to a meeting with history. The walls, fortified with towers, remind of the steadfastness of this fortification. Next to the ruins of the palace, a 10th century church rises from the rocks, a majestic witness of the era, the personification of Georgian culture and spirituality. Its interior, although battered by time, still breathes living history, testifying to the richness of religious traditions. The architectural details, carefully carved from porous stone and greenish sandstone, are also admirable, creating the unique appearance of this historical monument.

For those who seek to plunge into the depths of Georgian history, the Bochorma fortress will become an inexhaustible source of inspiration and delight. Here, among the mountains, every stone, every wall, every line tells its own story, telling about the wisdom and courage of the ancestors. And for travelers, adventurers and lovers of beautiful landscapes, Bochorma will appear as a symbol of the greatness of nature, complemented by majestic buildings forged by the hands of the genius of the Georgian people.
