Bochorma Fortress complex is located in Tianeti Municipality, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, among the fortresses and ruins of the region. The fortress dates to the 10th century, its exact construction date unknown, and once served as a strategic point and political centre of Kakheti. Over its long history the complex withstood Arab raids, came under the temporary control of Bagrat IV, and was restored by King Erekle II in the 18th century. In 1747, a battle between Erekle II and Abdul-Beg took place beneath its walls, consolidating the king's hold on the fortress.
Today the complex survives only in part: an enclosure wall, the Church of St George, and remnants of defensive and utility structures. It's worth setting expectations honestly: some visitors note the ruins now look more modest than descriptions suggest, with clear signs of neglect and some sections more damaged than others. That said, the views from the fortress over the surrounding valley and mountains are cited by reviewers as one of the main reasons to make the trip, and the road, which feels demanding at first, is repaid by the scenery.
