The basilica in Sioni village is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin and is known as Sioni of Khevi: the second name points to Khevi, the mountain country by the Georgian Military Road. A basilica is a long church without a dome, one of the oldest types of Georgian church.
Sioni stands in Khevi, between Pasanauri and Stepantsminda. The church of St George in Garbani stands about a kilometre and two hundred metres away, the Pkhelshe church a kilometre and four hundred. It matters not to confuse the village: the other Sioni of this country lies on the Tianeti side, tens of kilometres from here.
This is one of the most visited places of these mountains, and people call in on the way to Kazbek. Neither the car park nor the entrance is adapted for wheelchairs, which is worth knowing in advance. The rules are the usual ones: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, quiet.
