The monastery is dedicated to St. Nicholas, widely venerated in the Georgian tradition, especially as the patron of travellers and seafarers. This is a working monastery with an ordinary monastic order of life.
It stands in Vakhtangisi, on the plain of Gardabani Municipality, not far from the Azerbaijani border. The proximity here is telling: village mosques operate a few kilometres away while a monastic community lives here. Kvemo Kartli is precisely the region of Georgia where such neighbourhoods occur most often.
The community welcomes guests but keeps its own order of the day: modest dress is required, a headscarf for women, and voices kept low. Photographing the brethren or the interior without permission is not done.
