  • Description

Manglisi Sioni is the pearl of Kvemo Kartli, a majestic testimony to the rich history of Georgia. Located near Daba Manglisi, this temple in the municipality of Tetritskaro represents Georgia's first steps towards the adoption of Christianity in the 4th century. Legend claims that Bishop John, sent by Constantine Caesar, carried sacred relics and treasures, including part of the Holy Cross, for the construction of churches, including Manglisi Sioni.

The temple has two historical layers in its architecture. The first, a simple tetraconch, may be associated with the reign of Vakhtang Gorgasali in the 5th century. This first layer, covered by the dome, reflects the early stages of Christian architecture in Georgia and serves as the starting point for its development.

In the 7th century, Manglisi was destroyed by the invasion of the Byzantine emperor Hercules, but over time it was restored. Later, in the mid-19th century, under Russian rule, the temple underwent changes on the initiative of Exarch Isidore and with the efforts of the local Russian regiment. Although Manglisi Sioni was damaged and lost some details, it still remains an important architectural monument.

By visiting Manglisi Sioni, you will plunge into the atmosphere of ancient times and see how history is intertwined with architectural splendor. This place is worth visiting for anyone who is interested in the history of Georgia and wants to immerse themselves in its spiritual heritage.
