The Money Museum was founded by the National Bank of Georgia in 2001 in Kvareli, in the heart of Kakheti, on Rustaveli Street. Although the National Bank itself is headquartered in Tbilisi, the Money Museum is located here, 150 km from the capital, a frequent source of confusion for visitors. The exhibition spans 26 centuries of monetary history in Georgia, from 6th-century BC Colchian tetri coins to staters from the era of Alexander the Great, Roman Republic and Empire coins, banknotes from various countries and periods, and money samples that never entered circulation.
Interactive zones include a financial literacy quiz and a banknote-design activity, making the museum a good fit for families with children. The core exhibition is compact, taking about 10-15 minutes to see in full.
Entry is free. The museum is open Monday and Thursday-Sunday, 10:00-17:00, and closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. Official website: moneymuseum.nbg.gov.ge. Kvareli is also a wine town, with marani and cellars nearby. All things to do in Kvareli are in the Madloba catalogue.
