The church of Saint George stands in Iliurta, a village in the mountain part of the Akhmeta municipality. It is the parish church of a small community, living by the rhythm of a mountain village rather than by a schedule for visitors.
This is no longer the lowland Kakheti of vineyards: the road climbs, the landscape changes, and distances are measured in time rather than kilometres. To the north begins the high country with its Tusheti villages, reached by the road over the Abano pass, open only in the warm season. Iliurta lies on the approaches to those places, between the valley and the real mountains.
The doors are opened during daylight, though this is the habit of a mountain village rather than a strict schedule. Come in good weather and with daylight to spare: the final stretch is unpaved and needs care. Dress with shoulders and knees covered.
