The domed church of the Satorge monastery is cut straight into the rock. The dome is not built up from stone but hewn out of the mass from inside, a method usual for the cave churches of Gareji.
Satorge is placed in the tenth century and counted among the score of houses in the Gareji desert. This part of the ridge lies in the southernmost section of the complex, by the border with Azerbaijan, and is harder to reach than the Lavra. Dry hill steppe without water sources lies around.
Take nothing away from the site, not even small fragments. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
