  • Description

On a hill in picturesque Kakheti, in a cozy corner of Dedoplistskaro, stands the Elia Monastery - a historical shrine that inspires awe and admiration. The holy monastery is dedicated to the memory of the great prophet Elijah Tezbiteli and has been located on Mount Eliya since the sixth century. Every year, on August 2, believers gather here to honor his memory and pray at the foot of the rock, piercing the night sky with their prayers.

The history of this amazing temple stretches back centuries. Archaeological finds indicate its existence as early as the 6th century, although the exact date of its construction remains a mystery. The restoration of the temple was carried out in 2006, giving it new grandeur.

Legends and traditions hover around Mount Elia, one of which is captured in the notes of Alexandre Dumas, traveling through the Caucasus in the 19th century. According to legend, in this holy monastery Ilya Tezbitelli received food brought to him by ravens before ascending to heaven.

The Elia Monastery is glorified not only for its spiritual significance, but also for its unique architecture. The Chapel of St. Elia, which has survived many trials, continues to serve the faithful under the reliable leadership of a local resident and architect of the Patriarchate, Sergo Kartvelishvili.

One of the secrets of the monastery is its connection with Khornabuji Castle. Legends tell of a mysterious tunnel leading into the past and connecting two historical sites. Today this tunnel has collapsed, but its entrance remains evidence of ancient times and a touch on the secrets of the past.

A visit to the Elia Monastery is worth it for everyone who wants to plunge into the history and spiritual atmosphere of Georgia, immerse themselves in legends and traditions, and feel the greatness of the ancient Orthodox monastery, rising on the top of the mountain.
