Pirukughmari is one of the Gareji houses cut into the ridge. There are two complexes with this name, and both are placed in the ninth century, when cave monasticism in Gareji was spreading especially fast.
At different times the Gareji desert counted up to twelve monasteries, which is reflected in the old name of the complex, the Twelve of Gareji. Later the surrounding hermitages were added and the total passed twenty. Tens of kilometres of dry steppe without surfaced roads lie between them.
Take nothing away from the site, not even small fragments. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
