The shrine named Dedaghvtismshobeli stands high in the mountains, far from inhabited villages. The name translates as Mother of God, and in mountain eastern Georgia such names attach to places where Christian veneration grew together with something older.
The point lies in the high mountains at the junction of the Pshav Khevsureti lands, where villages are scattered through gorges and linked by dirt roads. The nearest church is more than ten kilometres away. Snow lies long here and the roads are closed for part of the year.
Do not touch ribbons, coins or offerings, as they are left on purpose. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Combine the visit with neighbouring villages to save time.
- Bring a torch if it is dark inside.
- Take your litter away with you.
Getting there
- Ask locals for directions, since the short way is not always obvious.
- The last stretch runs along a dirt road that softens after rain.
