A parish church of Saint George. The dedication is the commonest in the country: for Georgia, Saint George is not simply a saint but the figure around whom the folk calendar is built, with two major feast days a year, in spring and in late autumn.
The prefix kveda marks the lower part of a settlement, and Kvaliti, like many villages of the Imeretian foothills, is split in two. The halves live differently: level yards and the road below, a slope with orchards and a view over the valley above. The church belongs to the lower half. The date of building is unknown.
Village churches like this one usually open for the service, so a Sunday morning is the surer time to come. If the doors are locked, ask about the time in the village. Dress modestly, women wear a headscarf.
