The church at Askana is the only site of the village, and no dedication has become attached to it: it is known simply as the church of this village.
Askana lies east of Ozurgeti, in the foothills where lowland Guria turns into hills. Getting there means taking a road that becomes part of the impression in itself: greenery, streams, wooden houses on stilts. Gurian villages are on the whole documented worse than Kakhetian ones: the region is small, the tourist flow passes by towards the sea, and the inland routes are left to local people.
All the more reason to turn off here: there will be no explanatory signs, but there will be no crowds either. Dress soberly and treat the walls with care. Parts of the road are unpaved and turn to mud in the rain.
