  • Description

On the picturesque peaks of Adjara, in the village of Alambari, Kobuleti municipality, rises the Mamuka Fortress, bizarrely spread out on a mountain called “Tsikhiskeli” - which means “throat of the fortress” or “neck of the fortress”. Its history dates back to the 18th century, and the fortress was built by Mamuke Tavdgiridze himself, whose name remains forever in the history of this place.

In the era of the XV-XVI centuries, the village of Alambari proudly served as the residence of the Gurian rulers, giving this corner a special character. However, the fortress inevitably underwent the tests of time, and its walls felt the power of the earthquake in 1959. Today, only the southeastern wall rises majestically to a height of three meters, being the only evidence of its former glory. The ruins, although they have lost their original appearance, have found new life in the form of a tower, the area of which is 47 square meters.

An integral part of the historical complex was the Church of St. George in the village of Alambari, but over time it succumbed to destruction, and currently its appearance has been lost. However, visitors, looking around the ruins of the fortress and thinking about the antiquity of these places, can feel the true spiritual depth of history, immersing themselves in the atmosphere of times and events.

For those who seek to immerse themselves in the richness of the Georgian past, the Mamuka Fortress becomes a kind of temporary machine, transporting you to an era of splendor and grandeur. Visitors will be able to enjoy not only the unique architecture and cultural heritage, but also feel a touch of the soul of this amazing corner of Georgia.
