The convent of St. George in Tskhemvani is a quiet working monastery in the green hills above Kobuleti. Below, the resort hums; above are prayerful silence, gardens and the measured monastic order: the contrast people climb here for.
The convent lives by its own labour and services, and for a traveller it is a handy way to add a page of Adjara’s living spiritual heritage to a seaside holiday. The road into the hills runs through the tea villages of the Kobuleti country, and coastal views open up already halfway. At the top the road bustle finally fades, leaving the gardens, the convent walls and the bell calling to service.
Guests are received kindly, but the order asks respect: modest dress is essential, a headscarf for women, quiet on the grounds, and the nuns are not photographed without leave.
