The Samsmelo mosque is a working village mosque in Rakvta, a mountain village of Khulo Municipality. Upper Adjara is known for its tradition of village mosques, often wooden and adorned with carving, and Samsmelo continues that line, remaining the spiritual centre of the village’s Muslim community.
For a traveller in mountain Adjara such mosques are a vital part of the local colour alongside the waterfalls and arched bridges. Rakvta lies off the Goderdzi road, and a call here turns an ordinary transit through the mountains into an acquaintance with the living order of the gorges.
Respectful manners are valued here: if the doors are open and no prayer is under way, a guest is usually met kindly. The community’s feast days are best checked with locals: on such days guests should keep clear of the prayer hall.
