The Monastery of the Elevation of the Cross is also known by its Georgian name, Jvartamaghleba: it literally means the raising of the cross and repeats the dedication of the community. This is a working monastery.
It stands on a mountain above the village of Agara in Khelvachauri Municipality, and the change in altitude is felt at once. The coastal strip of Batumi stays below, while pines, silence and an open terrace with a view over the Batumi plain and a band of sea begin above.
Guests are welcomed, but the community keeps its own order of the day. Covering clothing is expected, a headscarf for women, and during services conversation and photography are out of place. The patronal day falls on the Elevation of the Cross and is kept in autumn.
