The community is dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. In Georgia the feast is called Mariamoba and is kept at the end of August, and it remains the principal day of the monastic year.
The monastery stands in green foothills by the village of Kheghru, south-east of Batumi. This is no longer the resort coast but rural Khelvachauri Municipality, with tea slopes, walnut trees and narrow lanes between homesteads. A monastery here becomes the natural centre of local life.
The community is active and its rules are the usual monastic ones: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, quiet during services. The yard is open during daylight hours.
