The Monastery of St John Chrysostom stands in Kamani village, in the hills above the Gumista River valley not far from Sukhumi. According to church tradition, it was at Comana that St John Chrysostom, one of the most venerated teachers of the Church, ended his earthly journey, which is why the monastery has drawn pilgrims for centuries.

Both organised pilgrimage groups and independent travellers interested in holy sites and Abkhazian mountain scenery come here. The road to the monastery is part of the experience in itself.
