Batumi Architecture
Batumi was built in waves, and each one left its mark. The turn of the 19th and 20th centuries gave the city the neo-Gothic Cathedral of the Mother of God with its twin spires, the houses of the old town and cobbled streets lined with restaurants. Piazza, with its clock tower and mosaic, is new by comparison, built in the style of Italian towns. Modern Batumi is not shy of bold shapes: the Technological University tower with a Ferris wheel set into its facade, apartment blocks with wave shaped and terraced balconies, a glass cylinder beside an artificial waterfall and the faceted McDonald's pavilion above a reflecting pool. The gallery also includes a university building with a fountain, a pagoda roofed pavilion by a lake and street details such as graffiti on a plinth.
