The Garsevan Kurdghelaidze Museum is a village collection in Shenako in Tusheti. The house shows objects of highland life: tools, dishes, textiles and family belongings left from the older way of living. The stone building itself is as much a part of the display as what stands inside it.
Shenako stands high in Tusheti, on a slope above the valley, looking out at the ridges and the neighbouring villages. The houses here are stone with flat roofs, and the village counts as one of the most beautiful in the region. Around it there is nothing but mountains, pastures and trails.
In Tusheti everything depends on the season: the Abano pass is open roughly from June to October, and in winter the village all but empties. Call before the trip and check that someone is there. The visit takes half an hour, the drive here takes a day.
Tips
- Plan for July to September, outside the season the pass is closed
- Drive a four wheel drive only, the road over Abano is demanding
- Call ahead and check whether anyone is in the village
How to get there
- From Akhmeta over the Abano pass to Omalo, then on to Shenako, a full day on the road
- There is no scheduled transport, people usually hire a jeep with a driver
