Introduction of sugar duties: Georgia regulates imports from November 20

According to the latest news from the BMG Media Platform, Georgia is preparing to introduce a temporary duty on sugar imports, a few days remain before the decree comes into force on November 20 of this year. This measure, approved by the government, will be in effect until July 1, 2024.

According to the approved document, a tax of 0.4 lari ($0.15) per 1 kilogram of sugar will be levied on imports of more than 100 kilograms. This means that a tax of 400 lari (approximately $150) will be levied on one ton of imported sugar.

However, the regulation provides for exceptions for cases where a preferential EUR certificate of origin is used.1 for sugar or in cases where tax benefits are applied based on the declaration of origin.

It is important to note that the decree does not apply to sugar, the transportation of which began by sea before the publication of this document.

The entry into force of this duty on November 20 underlines Georgia's desire to regulate imports and use the country's resources more efficiently in accordance with the economic challenges facing the government.
