The Ministry of Health of Georgia will introduce direct purchases of rare and innovative medicines directly from manufacturers.
This step will be enshrined in law and will avoid inflated prices. According to the statement of the Minister of Health Zurab Azarashvili, work has already begun on the development of an appropriate legislative initiative. According to the minister, this approach is used in cases when pharmaceutical companies are not profitable to sell rare medicines or they are trying to sell them at inflated prices.
To date, the Ministry is already conducting direct purchases of insulin. The budget for the purchase of rare medicines is more than 30 million lari, and for insulin - more than 10 million lari.
The Minister stressed that such purchases should be fixed by law to ensure transparency and efficiency of the process. He also noted that the contract with the International Trade and Economic Association (MEA) will allow spending budget funds more correctly.
Other reforms are also being carried out in Georgia to increase access to medicines. The opening of the Turkish market has significantly reduced the prices of medicines. In addition, a laboratory has been established that monitors the quality of imported medicines and medicines produced in the country.
