A small chapel stands south of Kabali, beyond the built-up area. In Kakhetian villages such buildings are placed by roads and at the edge of fields so that one can step in on the way.
The area belongs to Lagodekhi Municipality, right by the borders with Azerbaijan and Dagestan. The lands between the Alazani and the foothills were long part of the Jar Belokan region, and Avars still live alongside Georgians in local villages. The landscape is flat, with fields and shelter belts, and beyond them the mountains rise like a wall.
Keep a restrained manner: for nearby villages this is a working place of prayer. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Come in the morning while the light is soft.
- Check the forecast, as rain makes the approach slippery.
- Keep some cash for a donation, as there is no card terminal.
Getting there
- The last stretch runs along a dirt road that softens after rain.
- Plan the visit together with nearby stops, as there is no dedicated transport here.
