The museum is devoted to Niko Marr, an orientalist, linguist and archaeologist whose excavations at Ani and work on Caucasian languages made his name known far beyond Georgia. The display holds material on his biography and scholarship, editions, photographs and objects connected with the family. The collection is rural but its subject is academic.
The museum stands in Bukistsikhe, a village in the Chokhatauri municipality, in the foothills of Guria. Around it are wooded slopes, orchards and the road leading to Bakhmaro, the well known mountain resort. The village is small and quiet.
The collection is intimate and half an hour is enough. The first half of the day is the easier time to come, and it is better to arrange the visit in advance. Combine the trip with the road to Bakhmaro or a wider Guria route.
Tips
- Combine the visit with a trip to Bakhmaro, the road runs the same way
- Ask about the Ani excavations, the main page of his biography
- Come in the warm season, the foothill road is harder in winter
How to get there
- From Chokhatauri along the local road towards Bukistsikhe, about twenty minutes by car
- Roughly forty minutes from Ozurgeti via Chokhatauri
