The Georgian Numismatics and Artifacts Museum gathers coins of different periods and antiquities found in Kvemo Kartli and beyond. Numismatics is the core here: the coins show which states and trade routes passed through the region. The collection is private, so it is shown and explained in person.
The museum is in Bolnisi on Sulkhan Saba Orbeliani street, in the central part of the town. Bolnisi is best known for the Bolnisi Sioni, the oldest surviving church in Georgia, a few kilometres from here. The town is small and convenient for a short stop on the way.
The collection is intimate and half an hour is enough. A phone number is listed, so the visit can be arranged in advance. It makes sense to combine the trip with Bolnisi Sioni and Dmanisi, which lie the same way.
Tips
- Call ahead, private collections work by arrangement
- Combine the visit with Bolnisi Sioni, the main sight of the district
- Ask about local finds, the coins from the surrounding area are the most interesting
How to get there
- From Tbilisi via Marneuli and Bolnisi, about an hour and a half by car
- Minibuses from Tbilisi run regularly, the town is walkable from the bus station
